DfE UPDATES
Funding for Primary PE & Sports Premium
Schools receive PE and sport premium funding based on the number of pupils in years 1 to 6.

In cases where schools don’t follow year groups (for example, in some special schools), pupils aged 5 to 10 attract the funding.

In most cases, DfE determine how many pupils in your school attract the funding using data from the January 2024 school census.

If you are a new school or a school teaching eligible pupils for the first time in the academic year 2024 to 2025, DfE will base your funding on data from the autumn 2024 school census.

Funding for 2024 to 2025

Schools with 16 or fewer eligible pupils receive £10 per pupil.

Schools with 17 or more eligible pupils receive £16,000 and an additional payment of £10 per pupil.

Payment dates for 2024 to 2025

-
Maintained schools, including PRUs and general hospitals

-
7/12 of your funding allocation on
30 October 2024
-
5/12 of your funding allocation on

If you are a new maintained school or if you are teaching eligible pupils for the first time in the academic year 2023 to 2024, local authorities receive:

Preparing for HMI Inspection

All state primary teaching establishments are politely advised to take DfE statutory subject deadlines seriously as information requested is a legal requirement and is intended also for wider community consumption and for HMI inspection - DfE advice received in person at the Bromley Regional Conference in Sept 2015 included confirmation that HMI arrange school inspections months ahead and review online evidence months ahead as well. It is therefore meaningless to add online amendments as a panic measure in response to the school receiving notification of an inspection visit.
External regional audits are also continually ongoing regarding the authenticity and quality of PESS Premium spend and impact associated with national expectations including sampling by Active Partnerships.
Recent borough HMI visits have revealed a raised interest in PE with Deep Dives and scrutiny of impact of PESS Premium. The following subject areas have been discussed with data/ information requested to support:
-
Knowledge and understanding of DffE expectations and guidance produced via local and national advisory bodies (e.g. see below for afPE and refer to DfE & Ofsted Updates tab)
-
Evidence of planning and assessment
-
Monitoring and evaluation of whole school teaching delivery
-
Professional development opportunities for both Subject leader and non-specialist teaching staff (e.g, Bromley Primary Sports PE CPD membership: courses attended and website access to a library of resources)
-
PE & Games used as PPA cover (N.B: PESS Premium funding not to be used for PPA cover and generally discouraged by HMI)
-
Quality assured coaches and staff mentoring practices
-
Inter competition evidence (participation & results data)
-
Community club links
-
Lunchtime Play Leaders provision
-
Promotion of Premium to the wider school community
-
Student voice feedback
With the raft of information being continually published by DfE and Ofsted, we seek to support the time management of Primary & SEN teaching staff by way of identifying further updates related to initiatives affecting the Sport Premium:
