Primary School Physical Education Specialism

& Subject Leadership (2021-22)

The Qualifications and Outcomes:

 

Bespoke physical education and school sport qualifications for Primary School Teachers; Coaches; Higher Level Teaching Assistants and Teaching Assistants developed by the Association for Physical Education and Sports Leaders UK (SLUK).

 

The aim of the qualifications is to upskill primary colleagues to be able to TEACH and lead the delivery of high-quality primary school PE; School Sport and Physical Activity.

 

The course will especially impact upon the top 3 concerns of subject knowledge, health and safety and subject leadership thus impacting upon the DfE Vision Statement:

 

‘All pupils leaving primary school physically literate and with the knowledge, skills and motivation necessary to equip them for a healthy, active lifestyle and lifelong participation in physical activity and sport’

 

The qualification’s learning outcomes will subsequently impact upon sustained high quality planning and delivery of the recently issued prescribed national five indicators that are:

 

  1. the engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity – kick-starting healthy active lifestyles

  2. the profile of PE; Sport & Physical Activity (PESSPA) being raised across the school as a tool for whole school improvement

  3. increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport

  4. broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils

Why Participate and What are the Benefits?

 

  • The course will provide a structured programme for schools to reflect and develop their own PE, school sport, health and well-being opportunities; therefore enhancing pupil experiences and learning outcomes

  • The qualifications will be an effective use of the primary physical education and school sport premium funding in addressing the goal of continuous professional development

  • The course will utilise regional expertise so as to enable relevant and bespoke delivery including (if required) additional support and mentoring opportunities

  • With the Primary PE & Sports Premium renewed for this year as a result of special circumstances i.e. COVID-19, this is really expected to be the final year when it is possible to undertake this course with all costs (including any supply cover) fundable via this ringfenced grant for schools.

Entry Requirements: 

 

This course is open to members of staff employed by schools (not externally contracted sports coaches who are not on the school’s payroll). The course is therefore targeted at:

 

  • School Sports Coaches or PE Specialists

  • Qualified Teachers

  • Primary PE Subject Leaders

  • Teaching Assistants and HLTAs

The Qualification and Outcomes

Bespoke physical education and school sport qualification for Secondary and Primary QTS teaching staff developed by the Association for Physical Education and Sports Leaders UK. The aim of the qualification is to develop specialism in supporting the emotional and social wellbeing of pupils through physical education. Upon completion of the course, delegates will have successfully attained the ability to:

 

  • Explain the importance of emotional and social wellbeing to pupils’ education and wider development

  • Recognise current challenges to pupils’ emotional and social wellbeing

  • Advocate the role of physical education in promoting pupils’ emotional and social wellbeing  

  • Plan, implement and evaluate physical education approaches that:

       a) support pupils’ emotional and social wellbeing 

           within their own practice

       b) enable pupils to take care of their own    

           emotional and social wellbeing

       c) assist colleagues to support pupils’ emotional

           and social wellbeing in physical education

  • Contribute to the promotion of pupils’ emotional and social wellbeing across the school

This qualification also especially addresses invaluable support to Primary Schools re: Primary PE & Sport Premium expectations and alignment to the DfE’s ongoing vision statement that:

Entry Requirements:

 

Teachers with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) involved in the teaching of physical education. PSHE subject leaders would also find great value from participating within this course given direct links to supporting high quality teaching and learning provision attached to statutory Compulsory Health Education.
